Science Students are very happy because the caterpillars have finally arrived. It's unfortunate that there was a delay in receiving them. This afternoon, each child prepared a small container containing food and added one caterpillar. They also put holes in the lid (see photo above). On Monday, students will observe the little creatures and describe what they see as well as make a prediction: how long will it take before the caterpillars transform into a chrysalis? French language arts Students wrote a paragraph to describe a photograph taken in the Sahara desert. English language arts I read chapter 2 of The Hundred Dresses and we talked about the importance of following our believes and values. Students continued to work on their plays/skits. We took advantage of the beautiful weather to go outside and practice on the compound. Social studies Students continued to read and gather information about Tunisian life. Art Some students worked on their Happy Tree and others started a hamsa hand also called Fatima hand (see photo above). Notes
Sciences This morning, students wrote a quiz: compare insects and arachnids using a Venn diagram. They had to follow instructions to draw an insect. Part of the instructions included math concepts (measuring, perimeter, cm, addition). English language arts Students are working in groups to plan and create skits. Math Today students analyzed the graph they drew yesterday. Questions for discussion at home
Math We started our unit on data analysis. Students chose a question to do a survey (i.e. What is your favourite pet? What is your favourite book series? What is the colour of your eyes?). Then they prepared a tally chart and asked the question to all students. Finally they created a bar graph to represent their results. Tomorrow we will analyze the data. French language arts Students are reading non-fiction books on animals and looking for cool facts. They have started to write some of their finding as "Did you know that...?" labels. English language arts I have started reading out loud The Hundred Dresses by Eleanore Estes. This book was written in 1944 and is still current today. Presentation about Tunisia Mme Gerri (Isabella's mom) came to talk to us about her experience in Tunisia. She showed us some interesting photos and brought artifacts such as a beautiful handmade wool carpet, a hammam bucket, a teapot, Tunisian money (the dinar) and an bowl made of olive wood. New seating plan for June
This morning students chose their new sitting spot and many are now in pods with their friends. We had a chat about the importance of carefully choosing their new desk partners in order to still be able to work and be productive despite the fact that it is June. Social studies We continue to study Tunisia. This week we will talk about food, celebrations, music, dance, arts and crafts as well as the family life. French language arts We are still learning about how to describe a photo using descriptive language, adding details and varying sentence beginnings. Assembly Two grade 2 classrooms and the afternoon kindergarten students presented at the assembly. All groups sang songs in French. Grade 2 students also read out loud. Happy tree Students worked on their happy tree today. They continued to write what is important in their life. Computer lab Students reviewed what they had posted in their Iris account and added reflections where needed. Math We corrected the math test on fractions. French language arts Students described another photo taken in Tunisia. The goal is to continue writing complete sentences with a variety of beginnings, using precise vocabulary and adding adjectives. Social studies We reviewed what houses look like in Tunisia. Then we learned that the Arabic language is written from right to left. The alphabet is very different from ours. Physical education Students played tennis outside on the VCC courts. They will be playing soccer next week. Music Music share starts June 3rd and will run till June 23rd. Forms are due by June 10th. French language arts We are using photographs to write paragraphs. We are learning to regroup ideas and to use precise language. Today we used a photograph of Tunisian children going to school. Pot pourri Between recess and lunch time students worked on incomplete tasks. Lunch Lunch was outside yesterday and today. Math Students wrote a quiz on fractions this morning. After, they played games such as fraction dominoes, fraction pizza or placing facts on a classroom size multiplication table. Language arts Students worked on different projects: Inside Out booklet and Robert Munsch story. Science There was a short quiz today: comparing mammals and reptiles using a Venn diagram. After, we started learning about reptiles. Physical education Now that the weather allows us to be outside, we have been going to VCC tennis courts to play tennis. Question for discussion at home

Math We reviewed how to read, draw and compare fractions as well as how to describe the two parts of the fractions. Then we continued to solve written problems. Play outside with learning buddies This week is "Play outside" week. This morning, we went outside to play different games. It was fun for the grade 3 to interact with their buddy outside the classroom setting. Langage arts Students completed and corrected their comprehension questions based on a non-fiction text about koalas. Social studies We watched a video on the medina in Tunis and learned about why the streets/alleys are so narrow. Kindergarten buddies This morning we helped our learning buddies from Mme Michelle's class put an artifact in Iris. Performance in the gym Students from room 10 played the recorder in front the volunteers who came to enjoy tea and goodies this morning. On stage were a group of grade 2 singing and a group of grade 5 playing the ukelele. It was so wonderful to listen and watch all those student perform together. What a treat! Math We worked on fraction problems this morning. I reminded students to read the problem carefully and then highlight key words such that they know what to use to answer the question. Laptops We used the laptops for an hour today. The idea was to try and finish typing the English story. As mentioned in my notes above, some students have homework to do this weekend! |
