Language arts We started the day talking about homophones and compound words. Students had fun drawing compound words and getting their other classmates guess what words they had drawn (i.e. sun + flower or bookworm). Presentation Tuvia showed us a slideshow and talked to us about his trip to London, England. Math We continued to work on geometry. Science We talked about how animals adapt in order to survive in the wild. It can be physical or behavioural adaptation. Due to the rainy weather, students had their sports day inside. There were many stations around the school and students were free to go from one to the other. There was also a "calm corner" where kids could go and relax away from the noise and the activities.
Language arts I finished reading The Hundred Dresses by Eleanor Estes. Notes
Learning buddies Today was our last session with our kindergarten friends. Grade 3 students made cards with a caring message to hand out. Presentation After recess, Gayleen, a volunteer from Calgary Wildlife Rehabilitation Society, came with her special friend, Lito the hawk. We learned a lot about what animals the shelter gets and why. Gayleen also shared amazing information about Swainson's hawks. Did you know that their eyes cover more than half of their face? Did you know that they are migratory birds and fly all the way to Argentina in the Winter? Info about the Widlife Society: https://www.dropbox.com/s/xbefr7tg350imey/Lito.jpg?dl=0 Science I showed a video about how fragile an ecosystem can be if one part disappears. Have a look at the video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ysa5OBhXz-Q Math We are learning about geometry. Today we worked on polygons. Notes

Surprise for Mme Pelleau This afternoon, Mme Edgett and the students surprised me with a concert. They sang and played the recorder for me. They also gave me flowers. That was a very special treat! Note
Social studies We have finished our study of Tunisia. Next step will be to compare the quality of life in the five countries (Canada, India, Peru, Ukraine and Tunisia). Novel study Today I read another chapter of The Hundred Dresses by Eleanor Estes. We discussed how bystanders are as responsible as bullies in situation of repetitive harassment. Math We reviewed how to add using different strategies. Health This afternoon Mme Harbinson was in our class talking about kindness and bullying. Note
Science Caterpillars grew fast over the weekend and we found chrysalises in the containers this morning. We transferred them to the classroom size net. We are now waiting for the beautiful Painted Ladies to appear! Students created their own Did you know that...? about an animal of their choice. Math Students did their last mad minutes (+, -, X) this morning. Two minutes for each. Later they worked on word problem solving. Art Charlotte's dad, Chad VanGaalen, came to do a cool art project with us this afternoon. He introduced the students to artist trading cards and gave each of them nine blank cards. Students were inspired and created amazing art work using colouring pencils and markers as well as doing collages. Here is what Chad shared with us: In September of 1997 Don Mabie (a.k.a. Chuck Stake) held the first ATC trading session in Calgary at The New Gallery. Since that time on, regular Trading Sessions are every month at the New Gallery. 75 people have come to the monthly trading sessions with a group of 30-35 people that come regularly. Most of the people who come are artists, art students and members of the general people from six to sixty years old. Art We spent most of our morning doing a special project for dad. It was a busy but very enjoyable time. Assembly We had the pleasure of listening to the morning kindergarten sing a song in French and share with us what they learned about the monthly virtues. We also sang our school song together. Note
What a fun day we had today! First of all students created a Tunisian plate using plaster of Paris and little glass tiles. There were many steps to get to the final product and some students said that it was "frustrating fun". Thanks to the four volunteer parents who worked in unison, the plaster was mixed and ready on time. In the afternoon, students had the tea and date ceremony. When they entered the gym, they washed their hand with rose water. Then, they sat in circles and we served them sweet mint tea, dates and an orange. For some children, it was their first time tasting dates. A new experience! Notes
